In the course of construction of the "Duesseldorf Arcades Shopping Centre" Wittfeld were awarded the contract for the turn-key ready construction of the building pit. The biggest challange out of this building measure was the making and implementation of the arrangements for handling massive quantities of earth on site and the logistics necessary for carting away large quantities of earth and demolition material out of the centre of Duesseldorf. With this in mind a logistics plan was drawn up before commencing work to ensure that all work was carried out to the satisfaction of the Duesseldorf Municipal Authorities, the owner of the building and neighbouring residents. A major item in the planning was carting away 160 truck loads each day over six days per week.
In order to ensure that there was no interruption in the daily movement of these large quantities of earth, Wittfeld arranged for expert exploratory raster-screening to continally take place during excavation work and thus ensuring expert advice on the necessary measures for the movement of the various classes of any harmful substances found in the earth. This method of approach made it unnecessary to provide special certification for the purpose of intermediate storage of excavated material.
